The Schmooze

Jake Gyllenhaal, Amy Schumer, and More Read Immigrant Mom’s Child Separation Story

Maggie Gyllenhaal, sister of Jake Gyllenhaal and fellow actor, has orchestrated a video with 30 celebrities to vocalize the heart-wrenching story of a Honduran woman who has been separated from her 18-month-old son as a result of the Trump administration’s separation policy.

The story of Mirian, a Honduran asylum seeker, was told by Amy Schumer, Glenn Close, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and more celebrities in a 4-minute video, in which the celebrities read out Mirian’s affidavit.

The video demonstrates these celebrities’ visceral emotional reactions to the separation between a mother and her toddler son, who fled from Honduras due to fears of escalating government violence.

Yet again, we see the positive and transgressive efforts that the Hollywood community are making in opposition to the Trump administration’s continued policies of intolerance and social injustice.

Much like the demonstrations and hunger strikes in Toledo, Texas involving Lena Dunham and Evan Rachel Wood, some celebrities are using their status to muster support and sympathy for the struggle of vulnerable families being torn apart by these new legislation.

We congratulate the courage of these influential people for using the tools that they have. Now let’s join them.
