VP of Editorial Product and Audience Engagement

You will lead a newly created innovation team in shaping and driving the strategy for product that showcases our journalism, and the vision that defines the readers experience of The Forward, both on current and emerging platforms. This role will focus on deepening loyalty and engagement of current brand enthusiasts; reaching broader audiences; and exploring modes of storytelling and information-sharing that turns casual readers into dedicated supporters. Success will be measured by increased followers, subscribers, and donors; and projects that create excellent user experiences.
This is a senior role that reports to the CEO and works closely with the Editor-in-Chief and senior leadership team. While weve always had a reader-centric, product-focused approach, this position is new and were looking for someone excited to dive into the work of shaping the role itself.

The Job The VP Editorial Product & Audience Engagement will:
- Develop, implement and refine a product strategy that accomplishes organization-wide objectives for readership growth, and engagement/subscriptions
- Establish standards and practices that consistently map projects to KPIs and business goals
- Own the product roadmap, collaborating across the company to balance reader, fundraising and other business needs
- Champion an entrepreneurial ethic for digital experimentation; create processes around identifying areas for improvement and building on our wins
- Oversee a team of editors, designers, and producers that creates and leads the company’s product strategy from within the newsroom
- Establish a culture of innovation that ties strategic goals to compelling reader experiences and products
- Collaborate with other company divisions to build consensus for the product vision
- Disseminate new digital techniques and tools throughout the organization.
- Deep understanding of and experience in digital journalism, and key players and trends in the competitive space
- Digital experience with a track record of growth
- High energy and a passion for non-profit, mission-driven journalism
- At least 8 years experience managing a team
- Strong skills in concept visualisation, communication, facilitation and presentation
- Broad experience working with teams across different organizational areas and disciplines, especially connected to revenue-related goals such as subscriptions, donations/membership and e-commerce
- Experience working with web and app developers and designers
- Understanding and facility with data-driven decision making, design thinking, distribution, SEO, and social media
- Experience utilizing Google Analytics and going way beyond vanity metrics; familiarity with Sailthru a plus
- Interest in the Jewish world a plus.

The advertising account executive is a Base Salary plus commission sales position responsible for maintaining and generating new advertising business for The Forward, forward.com, our social media placements and native advertising. The account executive reports to the VP of Sales, and services a cross-category client list to increase revenue, secure annual advertising contracts, and expand activity across all Forward platforms. In addition, the account executive is responsible for breaking new accounts from a list of leads developed in conjunction with the advertising department.
Major responsibilities and duties:
This position requires an entrepreneurial spirit and a strong work ethic. Specifically, the account executive will have the following responsibilities:
Drive revenue and grow the base of advertising accounts
Manage a list of 50 or more core clients, with regular contact to communicate The Forwards message and value and to become a trusted consultant
Build relationships with both agency and client decision-makers
Develop attractive, integrated advertising packages with assistance from marketing staff
Create proposals and presentations, when appropriate, that relate the Forwards products and audiences to the specific marketing goals of clients and targets; establish The Forward as a high-end niche market option for national and major regional advertisers
Create a territory plan within the first 60 days and update it quarterly thereafter
Manage all territory leads and report on sales activity weekly
Proactively alter territory plan and approach as necessary when pipeline analysis does not indicate that goals will be achieved
Conduct client- and target-specific research on spending trends, upcoming campaigns, decision-makers, etc.
Conduct a minimum of 5 meetings each week, defined as a meaningful discussion at the needs analysis stage or later; these meetings can be in person, on the phone, or via the Internet
Explore ideas for new products with clients/prospects, and work with marketing and sales management to introduce these products
Follow all workflow and production proceduresclient-facing and internalfor running accounts
Make collection calls as necessary to reduce days outstanding and assist accounting in the collection of bad debt
Travel up to 20% of the time to meet with existing client decision makers and credible advertising prospects
Perform other duties as assigned.

Social Media Intern
The Forward seeks an aspiring journalist or social media manager for a paid internship on its Digital team, which focuses on audience development. The internship would run for at least 10 weeks. A minimum of 20 hours per week is desired, although work hours are flexible. Forward interns are paid $13 an hour or may receive academic credit.

Create and curate compelling social media content on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Keep abreast of new social media trends/developments.
Help the Forward expand its audience on new and developing platforms, such as Apple News.
Analyze data to help optimize the Forwards social media and digital strategy.
One year of social media experience.
Interest in Jewish life, news, culture and current events a must.
Innovative, strategic, and analytical thinker.

Organizational and time-management skills.
Experience designing and editing images and graphics is a plus, but not required.
Writing social copy requires a keen eye for detail and the ability to write crisply and concisely. A candidate with strong writing and editing skills will excel!

The Forward seeks a journalist for a paid internship on its news team. The internship would run for at least 10 weeks. A minimum of 20 hours per week is desired, although work hours are flexible. The intern will write multiple short items a day and will ideally graduate to also writing longer, more fully reported stories.
Proven experience in journalism. Experience and interest in reporting and news a big plus.
Outstanding oral and written communication, collaboration and teamwork skills.
Some experience with content management systems and other web-based publishing tools.
A demonstrated interest in social media as a news source and personal platform.
Knowledge of the Jewish world.
Working knowledge of either Hebrew or Yiddish would be a plus.
Forward interns are paid $11 an hour or may receive academic credit.
